Dr. Jack Vallentyne

  • 1972 Reduced a serious international water pollution problem by stimulating legislation to lower levels of phosphates in detergents.

  • 1974 Improved public understanding of relationships between people and lakes in "The Algal Bowl", a book available in four languages.

  • 1974 to 1980 Influenced the thinking of 3,000 freshwater scientists in over 60 countries as President of the International Association of Limnology.

  • 1978 Improved the ability of governments to work co-operatively through incorporation of an ecosystem approach into the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

  • 1980 Alerted people to the increasing scale of Biospheric concerns by putting a globe on his back.

  • 1982 Began to develop positive long-term attitudes to environment through "Know your Ecosystem" talks to school children mainly in North America, Europe and Asia.

  • 1984 - Presented his person-planet image, directly and through the media, to thousands of people.

  • Served in several scientific associations including as Vice President of the Canadian Society of Environmental Biologists and Past President of the World Council on the Biosphere.

  • 1992 Received the Rachael Carson Award for increasing environmental awareness.

    The Rachel Carson Award is given to an individual who has "substantially increased public awareness of environmental issues to an extent that has resulted in a redefinition of policies and practices" The first Rachel Carson Award was given in 1988 to Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland of the University of California for his pioneering work in relating CFCs to destruction of the ozone layer. Dr. Vallentyne was the second recipient of the Award, for his role in reducing the level of phosphates in heavy duty laundry detergents in the early 1070s and for getting the concept of an ecosystem approach to environmental management into the Canada - United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1978.

  • 1996 Received an honourary degree from McMaster University, Hamilton.

  • 2002 A Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography.
