Have Globe Will Travel

Johnny Biosphere is a global hitch-hiker. Most of his life he has ridden on the back of Dr. Jack.

Scientists travel a lot — to scientific meetings and on projects. When Dr. Jack has finished his heavy-duty scientific stuff, Johnny takes over in schools.

The two of them have traveled throughout Canada, the United States, and Mexico. One of the other, or both, have been to Europe twenty-six times, seven times to Asia (India, Japan, China, Malasia, Indonesia, Philippines), six times to Africa (Egypt, Tunisia, Singapore, Morocco, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Kenya), four times to South America (Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina), and twice to Australia - New Zealand.

He has snorkled over the Great Barrier Reef, walked on the surface of Lake Eyre (a playa lake in Australia), and sailed on Lake Baikal in Russia. Dr. Jack has bathed in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans.

Between 1980 and 1992, Dr. Jack's employer, the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans, sponsored many of Johnny's visits to schools. Every three years, a new Director General would appear, cutting off the school visits with a caustic comment, such as: "Now it's time to get back to science." Then it would start all over again.

Johnny Biosphere Credit Cards

Johnny always carries a deck of playing cards in his back pack. Whenever he hears an unusually good comment or question, he stops what he is doing, takes the globe off his back, and pulls out the deck of cards.

After shuffling the cards, he spreads them out face down and asks the student to select one. The student can use the card anytime she or he needs help — in writing essays, in guidance, or even advice in love-life. Johnny records the name and address of the student, the identity of the card (say, the 3) and gives the student his address and phone number.

Between 1983 and 2003 he has handed out sixty cards. Of these only seven were used. Two went to adults.
